Looking for an Alabama State History Curriculum?

From Chief Tuskaloosa to the Tuskegee Airmen and from the Civil War to Civil Rights, this curriculum includes not only the history, but also the geography, industry, agriculture, major cities, famous people, government, and state symbols of Alabama.

The Alabama State History Curriculum, written by Carren W. Joye, is available for kindergarten through 9th grade. Although Alabama does not require state history for homeschoolers, Alabama public schools usually teach state history in the 4th grade. In some states, state history is taught or repeated in 7th, 8th or 9th grades. As a result, you may cover state history at any time as a separate course or in conjunction with U.S. History.

Covering Alabama history from pre-exploration to the 21st Century, with extra sections on maps, symbols, climate, and current government and economy

This Internet-linked, 175-day course adapts easily to teaching various grade levels together.

You must have Internet access to use this course.

The curriculum includes links to suggested:

  • Lesson Plans – More than 175 free online lesson plans! You can do all the lessons or only the ones you want.

  • Field Trips – 75 locations in Montgomery, Elmore and Autauga counties and 130 locations in other counties! Unlike a generic state history curriculum, specific field trip locations are named with contact information rather than simply “visit a historical landmark.”

  • Extra Activities – More than 300 additional research topics, arts and crafts, project ideas, historical movies, and creative writing assignments are included to provide extension exercises, or you may choose them to replace the lesson plans.

  • Books – 65 suggested readers and read alouds! Read them all or just choose one or two in each section.

  • Multiple Texts – Additional web sites, interesting stories, and activities are included to round out the topic or historical period.

Because testing is not required in Alabama, tests are not included. However, the course is designed in such a way that you will easily be able to create your own tests or use the special activities as tests if necessary.

Perfect for families with multiple children!

Carren made changes as she used the curriculum with her own four children.

The author, Carren W. Joye, is a homeschooling mother of four children, founder of Outlook Academy, and co-founder of Academy Days Co-op and Elmore County Homeschool Organization (ECHO). Carren is also the author of Homeschooling More Than One Child: A Practical Guide for Families ($14.95; ISBN 0-595-342509-0) and A Stay-at-Home Mom's Complete Guide to Playgroups ($13.95; ISBN 0-595-14684-8).

Carren spent a full year researching and compiling web sites for lesson plans, activities and information for the Alabama State History Curriculum. She then spent the following year making changes and improvements as she used the curriculum with her own four children. The curriculum then underwent a revision the following year as Carren prepared to use it in a homeschool co-op for grades 1 through 9; classroom and group activities and lessons were added. Still today, each summer the links are verified and updated as necessary.

Satisfied Parents and Teachers
Many homeschooling families around the state have used the Alabama State History Curriculum. In addition, Faith Christian Academy in Alexander City and three other private schools have used the curriculum for their 4th grade students, and the Academy Days Co-op in Montgomery still uses it for their state history rotation for grades 1-9 every four years.
